Formac 17.4 LCD takes on Apple's 17-incher
By Michael Flaminio, Insanely Great Mac
November 8th 2002

Format announced a new version of its 1740 LCD using new alignment technology

The Formac 1740 OX is the first of Formac's new oxygen line, featuring a "snow-white"
design, somewhat similar to Apple's Studio Display form factor. The key feature to
1740 OX is Fujitsu's Multi-Domain Vertical Alignment (MVA) technology. MVA proposes to
deliver the best possible overall picture quality from an LCD in terms of viewing
angle, response time and color.

LCD monitors are becoming more an more popular, especially with recent falling of
prices. All LCDs, however, are not created equal. Specs such as viewing angle,
contrast, brightness and refresh rates play greatly in an LCD, which obviously impacts
costs. Also, many displays on the market still use analog video, where better ones use
digital DVI or Apple's proprietary ADC technology. The 1740 OX features 220 nits
brightness, 400:1 contrast ratio and a 10-20 ms pixel response.

Formac is placing the 1740 OX against Apple's 17-inch Studio Display in both design,
specs and price. The display beats Apple's display in a number of specs, in addition
to having a slightly larger viewing area. The Formac display is available in both DVI
or ADC connectors. ADC is Apple's method for offering power, USB and video over the
same cable, limiting cable clutter. As far as I'm aware, Formac is the only
manufacturer offering ADC other than Apple. Aside for the specs, and looks, Formac's
display is also cheaper than Apple's current 17-inch by $300.

The Formac 1740 OX has an estimated retail price of $699 and is expected to be
available by the end of November.

Analysis:

Rumors of new Apple displays have been swirling for a while. The new Formac display
illustrates how over priced Apple's 17-inch Studio display is. Currently Apple is
offsetting the price of its displays through rebates when purchased with new
computers. The Formac display appears to beat out Apple in every category, which is
saying something since Apple's displays aren't too shabby.
