Apple releases firmware updaters

iMac and MDD G4s get some bug fixes and improved functionality

Apple has posted two firmware updaters -- iMac SuperDrive Firmware Update 1.0 for Mac
OS 9 and Power Mac G4 Firmware Update 4.4.8.

The iMac SuperDrive Firmware Update 1.0 for Mac OS 9 installs installs new firmware on
the SuperDrive which addresses an incompatibility with 4x DVD-R and 2x DVD-RW media,
and the 2x SuperDrive in iMac. You must perform this update If you intend to use 4x
DVD-R or 2x DVD-RW media in your iMac. This update also enables you to eject audio CDs
that are copy-protected or have mastering errors. This update is required only for
iMac models with 15-inch flat panel displays and an internal SuperDrive.

The Power Mac G4 Firmware Update 4.4.8 improves fan control behavior and reduces high
speed fan cycling when running in Mac OS 9 and will only run on Power Mac G4 computers
with Mirrored Drive Doors.

Editor's note: It will interesting to see if the G4 firmware updater actually reduces
what can only be described as the "god awful noise" most of these computers produce.
