Kudos and Brickbats for the iMac
By Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
December 31st 2002

"Shockingly fashionable" or "half a melon"? You decide.

Newsday's # 1 consumer product for 2002? The iMac of course. And not even the prized
17" model. No, the humble 15" flat-panel screen is described by Newsday as "delicious".

It doesn't stop there. The article trumpets, "the New iMac is still pound for pound
the most alluring personal computer on the shelf."

Author Steve Williams says it's about personality. The iMac has it; other PCs don't.
For Williams, the iMac is "shockingly fashionable", but it also has substance beneath
the style.

Not so for Associated Press, which slams the iMac, giving it the DLAPAPA (Designed
Liker A Picasso And Priced Accordingly) award category.

"You have to shell out $1,499 to get one with a CD-RW drive, chugging along on a
700-megahertz processor," says AP. Not so. An iMac 700 hasn't been $1,499 for quite
some time. As the author probably hasn't driven an iMac or is on Apple's media
blacklist for some reason, we won't embarrass the gentleman by naming him. Even if he
does think the revolutionary design resembles "half a round melon impaled with a bent
easel."

Analysis: We'd like to challenge the AP author to build a better mouse trap than the
iMac. After all, if it's so easy, perhaps we could all stick an easel into half a
melon and charge $1K for it.
