Plextor: Still SCSI After All These Years

Following their announcement of an internal 40/12/40 SCSI burner, Plextor have
announced a mid-February release for the external version of their SCSI PlexWriter
[attrib. MacBidouille].
This leaves the company the only maker, along with Yamaha, of SCSI CD writers. The
most common interface is IDE, followed by USB 2.0 and FireWire.
The PlexWriter features an Ultra-3 SCSI interface and Digital Audio Extraction speeds
of 40x. BurnProof is also standard issue.
The PlexWriter is Mac-compatible, although Plextor provides no Mac software for the
40/12/40S internal model which will be availabile in January. Plextor also make IDE
and USB 2.0/FireWire versions of the drive.
No price has been announced, but the internal version has a street price of around
$260.
Analysis: Not cheap and not the best performer now either. Yamaha's 24x rewrite speed
dwarfs the PlexWriter, and several other manufacturers have matched Yamaha's 24x speed
(if not in practice).
For pros needing to use their CPUs without PCI overhead or IDE buses taxing the CPU
will welcome an external SCSI option. PlexWriters also have an excellent reputation
for reliability - albeit at a premium price. The question is whether we should support
companies that don't support the Mac by supplying software.
