New laser presages 16X DVD writers in '04
By ron carlson, Insanely Great Mac
December 31st 2002
Rewritable media will get even more competitive in the not too distant future
Macworld UK reports that Mitsubishi Electric has developed a more powerful
semiconductor laser that will likely pave the way for 16X DVD writers with
availability set for 2004.
The new device delivers 200 milliwatt light pulses, which is double that of lasers
used in current 4X writers.
Each increase in optical drive speed means the laser, which burns data into a disk,
must become more powerful. When DVD writers first came out, they used 50 milliwatt
lasers. The jump to 2X speeds required a 70 milliwatt laser and, beyond today's 4X
drives, the next generation of 8X drives will user a 140 milliwatt laser, which are
already being commercialized.
Macworld UK reports that 16X writters will bring big benefits -- drives will write
data at 176Mbps. That roughly means a 4.7GB DVD disc can be written in three and a
half minutes versus around 14 minutes for today's fastest (4X) drives.
Editor's note: Do you think it possible or evenly likely that optical drives and media
could replace the venerable hard drive?
