M-Audio announces 7.1 PCI, USB Mac audio solutions
By Michael Flaminio, Insanely Great Mac
January 6th 2003

Think that 5.1 stereo system in the family room isn't good enough? M-Audio may have
something for your Mac

M-Audio this week announced two 7.1 audio devices for the Mac OS. The devices offer up
to eight channels of 24-bit audio for music, movies and games.

The Revolution 7.1 is a PCI card, which supports up to 192 KHz audio per channel at up
to 106db, and the Sonic Theater 7.1 is a USB breakout box which offers up to 96 KHz
per channel. Both devices offer 24-bit, 96 KHz sound input.

"Listeners can finally enjoy movies, music and games the way they were meant to be
experienced, said Adam Castillo, M-Audio's Marketing Director. "Revolution 7.1
delivers serious audio performance and quality with ease of use designed to appeal to
a wide segment of the consumer market."

Users can connect up to seven speakers and a subwoofer to a Mac, two more speakers
than in typical 5.1 surround sound systems. M-Audio notes that the two extra speakers
should be placed beside the listener, complimenting a typical 5.1 placement (two
front, two rear and one center). The devices also support 4.1, 5.1 and 6.1 formats and
feature a DTS pass-through for external decoders. The devices also support SRS
TruSurround XT, offering a virtual surround sound experience over standard stereo
speakers or headsets.

The Revolution 7.1 is expected to start shipping January 8, 2003 and will have a
suggest retail price of $99. The Sonic Theater is expected to ship in mid-January and
have a SRP also of $99. Both packages include MixMan Studio and Arkaos VJ Lite.
