Might be worth "forcing" them through the process the one time, to reduce 
future problems...
Keep in mind that you can have gmail pull the POP mail from their ISP server, 
and they can even keep their old outgoing email address (or make it an option 
to send from)
I use that option for one of my mail accounts which only offers POP.
