Well don't use it if you have more than one Mail User Agent. If you want to keep all your eggs on one computer basket and not leave your mail on a server POP works great.

Even using many IMAP user agents concurrently with one POP user agent works just fine. OS X's Mail.app as the POP one has a feature to leave fetched messages on the server for a few days or weeks, so you can still read them with IMAP in that time.
