Sounds like the request isn't getting the the VPN server. Does your router need port forwarding as well . . .or is having it in the DMZ sufficient? Depending on how your particular connection and DMZ work you might need to set it up to forward.
Firewall blocking the VPN ports (either the router's or the server's) might be another thing to verify . . .although I would think the server would open it when you turned on the VPN service.
