Why would the iPhone be using MPPE then? 

And I do not see a way to disable it on the iPhone, though i could easily be 
missing something.

Well, hopefully this will be sorted. When I asked Comcast about putting their 
hardware into bridging mode they said that was only allowed for fixed IPs. 
Hopefully their definition of bridging is actual bridging.
