Sigh,

I was getting extremely discouraged about the VPN wonkiness....So I
thought I would take a look at "Back To My Mac".

I googled and found the User Guide at apples site.

I realized while reading the rascal that BTMM was using the
same ports as L2TP/IPsec.

I had recently turned on 'BTMM' and I suspect that is the reason
that I could not send stuff to udp ports 500 and 4500 on any of
my machines, ie BTMM was nabbing the rascals.

I turned off all of the BTMM configuration rebooted and found
that I could *now* connect to the VPN *if* I tried connecting
from my internal net, not very useful.

I still cannot connect via 3G from the iPad...

The User Guide did not mention forwarding any ports.

Tomorrow I would like to take my nifty new macbook air to
a hot spot and see if the back to my mac stuff can work
where the VPN fails...

Would it be wise to turn off the forwarded ports that I
set up for the VPN and unload the vpnd server?

Is there a way I can mark the plist for the vpnd as 'do not load'?

I was really hoping that I could get the VPN going because
toting the iPad around is a bit more convenient that toting
the MBA ( and the pain of a theft would only be half as bad
as losing the MBA).

My biggest fear is that whatever is causing the iPad to fail
to connect will cause the BTMM to fail to connect.

I had about three weeks of being able to use the VPN on
the iPad and I really miss the ability to get back to
my net in a secure way.

Any suggestions?

Jerry
