My office just got in a suite of new 27" iMacs, 2.8GHz, 8GB, 1TB. They're huge, super fast, quiet and beautiful. However, now that I've used mine for a week, there are a few detractions:
- The tiny bluetooth keyboard works fine, even without a numeric keypad, but it's really hard to use Spaces! I used to do ctrl-arrow to navigate from space to space, but there's only one ctrl key on the keyboard, and it's on the far left side, and the tiny arrow keys are on the far right. My hand can't span the distance -- 9.5 inches to reach from the ctrl key to the => key. I think there's probably a way to remap the right option key to be a ctrl key, but I don't see how to do this in Sys Prefs... - The high-tech bluetooth 'super mouse' works well! My only issue with it is that it's far too HEAVY! Why did they make it weigh so much? It really gets tiring after a day of shoving the thing around. I wonder if there's a lead ring or something inside that can be removed? If not, I'll end up replacing it with a lighter Kensington or Logitech. - The screen is very bright and crisp, but heavy on the bluish side. Took a fair amount of calibration to get it neutral. Now, I don't want to rehash the glossy vs. matte wars, but I've got a window behind me and I simply can't see the screen for all the glare. (This iMac replaces a matte 23" Cinema Display HD in the same location.) At the end of the day, my eyes are bleary and I've got a headache. I've already ordered one of those matte films ($50 from RadTech). It can't come soon enough. Can't figure why there's no matte screen BTO option. - No DVI port! Only a Mini DisplayPort. Ugh. Was hoping to run my 23" Cinema Display as the 2nd monitor, but that would require a $100 ADC to DVI converter brick as well as a $30 DisplayPort to DVI cable. Seriously! Cheaper to buy a new Dell monitor and just pitch the CD. Other than the above items, it's an awesome machine. 8 cpu threads! I hope it doesn't end up with the video glitches people have reported, but these units are supposed to have the 'fix', so we'll see... BTW, when doing heavy graphics work with all 8 cpu threads cranking, there's a fan inside that really kicks up a storm, and it chugs out a fair volume of hot air out the top. But normally it's quiet as a church mouse. -Jon _______________________________________________ MacOSX-talk mailing list [email protected] http://www.omnigroup.com/mailman/listinfo/macosx-talk
