Jonathon,
Your system should support WPA. However, the original Airport card does not
support WPA2. See this article for confirmation:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2594
Make sure you have the latest Airport software installed on that system. Run
Software Update (from a wired connection ;) and it should find what you need.
