Re-writing sectors on a drive can cause them to be re-mapped if the original is found to be defective, so possibly the drive has decided not to use the bad part of the disk anymore. This is how Spinrite works, by making lots of effort to read data, and then once it has it, it re-writes it, sector-by-sector, causing the disk to re-map bad ones. I think the number of sectors the drive has re-mapped is stored somewhere like the SMART registers, but I'm not sure. The question remains though, will whatever problem caused part of the disk to go bad cause other areas to go bad too?
