my aside about the one book i produced end-to-end in Word may have detracted from my message ... taking a manuscript in Word and pouring it into a layout program is a typical workflow, but the process can range from smooth to tortuous, partly because authors are usually not skilled typographers nor graphic designers; plus, Word has a way of enticing authors to burden a manuscript with ill-conceived details

those on the receiving end of such documents have many strategies for coping, not the least of which are encouraging coordination and providing stylesheets and offers to review documents; but not all publishers or production artists are good communicators, so all kinds of things can go wrong -- for example one could be charged for corrections and/or one's book could be printed with major mistakes or faux pas

not sure if Kevin is going this exact path, but preparing a manuscript for someone else to lay out, especially for a fairly technical layout like Kevin describes, calls for some care
