if you self publish, write it in XML and do semantic markup, write the DTD if 
you need to, accounting for what your particular needs are (and they shouldn’t 
be complicated). Then use XSL to do the conversion to HTML, and options are 
also there for PDF. XMLplify is an XML editor that might help. But I don’t 
believe there is anything public that is “WYSYWIG”.

When we worked with SAMS on our book (8 years ago, and I’ve heard this hasn’t 
changed much) you had to use Word, but certain obtuse styles for code, 
sidebars, etc. FUBAR

and they STILL got it wrong, searching for two minus signs and then replacing 
them with an em-dash, in code as well. Stupid.

And if you use HTML 5, and do anything more than semantic markup and then use 
CSS for formatting, I’ll hunt you down, put on a Nitrile glove, and slap you.
