I would physically disconnect them, as merely feeding power to them is going to 
produce this behavior.

Another alternative is that you could take the drive out completely and stuff 
it in an open external case or "universal drive adapter" lashup, and stick it 
next to you in a quiet room while you are reading or doing paperwork.  Then the 
time it takes to listen for the problem is "served concurrently" with something 
you would be doing anyway.
