If you RESTORE the dmg file the disk or USB stick will boot any Intel Mac.

I restored the lion dmg to and 8gb stick and then copied a dmg of iLife '11 to 
the drive. I've never partitioned any USB media.

That is not true. However, I have no idea if putting the recovery partition on 
a thumb drive is at all useful.
