Do you have any large SQL databases (e.g., MailSteward)?  I discovered that 
just SEARCHING an SQL database marks the entire dataset as "modified" and to be 
backed up.

How about leaving your TM Preferences open.  When it starts a backup, it will 
tell you how many files it found modified, and how big the total storage to be 
backed up is.  At least it will point you in the proper direction to know if 
this is always the same humongous file (like an SQL database) or 2,000 small 
files that are getting mysteriously modified.

Also, make sure your system date/time/zone is not undergoing mysterious mood 
swings.
