Is there a good, modern, working alternative to Word? OpenOffice?
on Mac, Pages is probably the answer; it is however suffering from strategic
neglect and one can only guess at Apple's intentions; i have barely used
Scribus, but it seems pretty usable, though it's more layout-oriented, and bogs
down with long texts
LibreOffice is the fork of OpenOffice.org of today. I don't use Word or any
Office suit myself but I know this much, neither of OO.o nor LibreOffice even
tries to mimic MS Office or specifically MS Word. Microsoft is and know has
been using their ribbon graphical interface for their Office suit for some time
now and I can't imagine the FOSS variants would try and take that concept and
implement themselfs?
the OO.o lineage doesn't mimic MS Word so much in interface as in feature bloat
and byzantine working process when one wants to do fairly technical document
production tasks; they can't help it since they all seek to replace MS Office
in the enterprise so they put the goalposts in the swamp; after about 50 hours
on various OO.o projects a few years ago, my only use for it is as a Word
extracticator
