I did purposely enter my mail disk into the Privacy area, and then removed it out again. That's supposed to be a "quick fix" Spotlight index rebuild trick. Didn't work for me. The drive is otherwise well-behaved, ran permissions check and repair disk on it, came back clean.
Looking at the drive, there is an entire /.Spotlight-V100 structure on the drive, not sure why mdutil complains about "no index".
