Suggestions:

1 if you can run Snow Leopard, do so. SL doesn't eat anywhere near as much RAM, 
or VM, as Lion and Mountain Lion do.

2 don't leave Mail open. Mail eats a lot of RAM and VM, especially in Lion and 
ML. Quitting Mail and relaunching it 30-45 minutes later can free up some VM.

3 web browsers in general, and Safari and Chrome in particular, eat RAM and VM. 
Limit the number of open windows, and the number of tabs in open windows.
