Yes, both the analog and digital outputs are connected and the system (mac) 
sees both.  If I go to the Sound preferences panel, or if I hold down the 
option key and click on the sound icon in the menu bar (thanks to someone for 
that hint), both analog and digital options appear.  I can choose either one, 
and both of them work.

But in iTunes, I do not see the icon to the right of the volume slider.  At one 
time (weeks or months ago) I did, but not now.
