Hi, I am planning to use an SSD as the primary drive in my Mac Pro tower. The SSD is not large enough to hold all of my home directory, so I'd like to put some or all of my home directory on a second disk (a 3-TB hard drive). This same issue is likely to come up with the new Mac Pro cylinders, which have only one internal disk (an SSD of no more than 1-TB).
I certainly plan to put the OS on the SSD, and possibly part of my home directory. What would you put on the (slower) hard drive: 1. all of /Users (includes both my regular and admin accounts) 2. only my regular account's home directory (but all of it) 3. only certain subdirectories of my home directory 4. some other option My largest subdirectory is Movies, my next largest is Music, and my third largest is Pictures. I will definitely have to put at least Movies on the second disk, and probably Music as well. Is it best to put my entire home directory (or even all of /Users) on the second disk? If so, that will take away some of the speed advantage of the SSD, but perhaps there are other reasons to keep my entire home directory (or even all of /Users) together. Is that true? If it's not true, then should I simply keep my Movies and Music subdirectories on the second disk? Or is it better to keep those on the SSD and just put certain subdirectories of Movies and Music (e.g., the iTunes folder) on the second disk? Finally, once I decide what to put on the second disk, what is the best way to do this? Can someone please tell me exactly how to do this in the GUI or the exact command to use in the Terminal? Thanks, Gregg _______________________________________________ MacOSX-talk mailing list [email protected] http://www.omnigroup.com/mailman/listinfo/macosx-talk
