Thanks for the helpful information.

I was thinking that maybe I should keep my home directory and all of its 
default subdirectories on the boot drive, so you (and others) have confirmed 
that this is probably a good idea.

You said that you keep much of the contents of ~/Movies elsewhere and that you 
point iTunes to another location.  I see that in iTunes, under Advanced 
Preferences, there is a button to click to change the iTunes Media folder 
location.  If I click on that button and enter a new location (on a different 
disk), do I have to do anything else, ether before or after changing this 
pointer?  Will that change be transparent?

What is the best way to keep much of ~/Movies on a different disk, but still 
have the content appear to be in ~/Movies?  Should I use symbolic links for any 
subdirectories of ~/Movies that I want to keep on another disk?
