I’m afraid I don’t have much advice, but maybe I can contribute another data point.
I just bought a used 2012 Mac Pro that came with a 512-GB Crucial M4 SSD, on which I am running Mavericks (10.9.1). I’ve seen a few weird things as well, but I’ve only had the Mac Pro for a month, and I had never run Mavericks before that, and I never had an SSD in a Mac Pro before, so I was not sure which (if any) of these factors might be causing the weird behavior. Similar to what you mentioned, there have been a few times where I click on the Applications folder in the Finder and nothing shows up. I think this has happened with a few other directories as well. Usually if I click on a different folder and then click on the problem folder, all works as usual. I was not sure whether to blame the SSD, but maybe it is the culprit. There have been a few other odd things, but I don’t remember all of them. One thing that surprised me is that when I click on the Applications folder, I often see a bunch of generic icons, which then eventually change to the appropriate icons for their apps. I might expect this when I first boot, but I did not expect it days later. And although the system does not feel slower with the SSD than with my old HDD, it also does not feel remarkably faster either, though I’m sure some things are at least somewhat faster. I don’t know if this is important, but when I bought the Mac Pro, it came with the SSD mounted in a special tray in one of the 4 drive bays, so it was connected to the built-in SATA-II bus. I then bought a PCIe SATA-III card that allowed me to mount the SSD on the card, where it supposedly now could run at speeds beyond SATA-II. I don’t know if the PCIe card (Apricorn Velocity Solo x2) is causing any problems in my case, but it’s certainly possible. And if that’s not enough, I also bought another PCIe card (Orico PFU3-4P) to give me 4 USB-3 slots, so maybe this card is not behaving well. In summary, I have not had any catastrophic problems (or even any Finder crashes), but I have noticed several weird behaviors that I had never seen with my previous Macs. I thought Crucial was a pretty good brand, and it was not on your list of SSDs to avoid, but I thought I’d mention that I had a few weird things happen that might be similar to what you are experiencing. If our problems are due to the SSDs, then they don’t appear to be limited to only Mountain Lion or only Mavericks.
