FWIW, whenever Finder can't parse the .DS_Store file format, it defaults to 
opening in icon mode. I've seen this off and on, but especially with Yosemite. 
My guess is that the .DS_Store file format was never strictly defined (i.e., 
it's a hack), and it easily goes out-of-spec and can't be read, thus icon mode.
