It seems that for your particular use case, the .DS_Store file that gets written by the Finder is invalid and not parseable by it. It's broken. If it's possible, can you try your encrypted sparseimage on an El Capitan system and see if this bug has been fixed? If not, your only solution is to file a bug report. :-( It's an annoyance for everyone, and you'd think Apple would experience this too!
