I agree Mail on OS X is not Apple’s strong suit. Having said that, I also use Mail via IMAP. I made the transition from POP to IMAP probably five years ago, and it was a painful initial transition for a variety of reasons. But after working through that, I’ve been generally happy with Mail and IMAP. I, too, have tens of thousands of messages, about 65 gigabytes worth of mail.
