Don’t do that. That is ANCIENT advice. Like 10.4? I have very occasional issues where a VIP or a smart mailbox do not show the right number of unread messages (and I’ve filed several bugs with screen shots) but It is only the BADGE that is ever wrong, so I might see a ‘4’ for unread messages, but there are no unread or only one unread in the mailbox. I’ve never seen it show extra messages (show a ‘4’ and then list 5 messages) outside of some betas.
