What's the "y" directory?  Try having a look at your 
~/.cpan/CPAN/MyConfig.pm file.  What are the values of 
'build_dir', 'cpan_home', and 'keep_source_where'?  My guess is 
that they're wrong.  Maybe you answered "y" to one of the 
configuration questions, when it wasn't looking for a y/n answer?
