Thanks guys, I simply forgot to use sudo to chmod those files.

Ok now I want to install some CPAN modules - not to necessarily to upgrade stuff I already have but to add new features. I wanted to start with upgrading CPAN since I figure if anything should work, that will.

I have already done this as prescribed:
cpan> o conf cpan_home /var/root/.cpan
cpan_home /var/root/.cpan

Then I try to install Bundle::CPAN.

I get:
cpan> install Bundle::CPAN
Is already unwrapped into directory no/build/ANDK000
Could not chdir to "no/build/ANDK000": No such file or directory

If its already unwrapped into the dir, how can the dir not exist? even with sudo i can't cd into the /var/root directory to look around.

Now, I re-initialized CPAN and chose yes instead of no..then tried installing something:
cpan> install Net::Ping
Running install for module Net::Ping
Running make for B/BB/BBB/Net-Ping-2.24.tar.gz
LWP not available
Fetching with Net::FTP:
ftp://archive.progeny.com/CPAN/authors/id/B/BB/BBB/Net-Ping-2.24.tar.gz
LWP not available
Fetching with Net::FTP:
ftp://archive.progeny.com/CPAN/authors/id/B/BB/BBB/CHECKSUMS
Checksum for yes/sources/authors/id/B/BB/BBB/Net-Ping-2.24.tar.gz ok
yes/sources/authors/id/B/BB/BBB/Net-Ping-2.24.tar.gz: No such file or directory
yes/sources/authors/id/B/BB/BBB/Net-Ping-2.24.tar.gz: No such file or directory
tar: Failed open to read on yes/sources/authors/id/B/BB/BBB/Net-Ping-2.24.tar.gz <No such file or directory>
Couldn't opendir no/build/BBB000: No such file or directory at (eval 14) line 5419

Of course these dirs don't exist--why would I have all of the possible CPAN subdirectories on my computer? Why can't it just create the dirs and move on?

It is easier to perceive error than to find truth, for the former lies on the surface and is easily seen, while the latter lies in the depth, where few are willing to search for it.
