I actually got started on that - you'll notice that there's a File/Open... menu item, but it's disabled. That, and opening a POD by double-clicking on it in Finder, was often dumping core - too buggy for this release.
Good idea about the command-line switch, though - it'll go on the TODO list.
If .pod files are double-clickable in the Finder, wouldn't that give you command-line support for free with 'open'?
