They do not work, and are not necessary for, MacPerl 5.6.1. MacPerl 5.6.1
comes with everything in cpan-mac already, except somewhat rewritten, so it
may work slightly differently.

You shouldn't do that, it won't work. You need the binary installation.

You did too much extra work. :-) Just install MacPerl 5.6.1b3 and NOT
cpan-mac.
I might release a new version of cpan-mac that fails if you try to use it
or install it if the MacPerl version is too great.
