Unanswerable as stated.

Does the script seem to be straining AppleScript's capabilities?  Does the
AppleScript part seem natural and the bits of Perl contrived?  (In the
latter case, you might want to stick with AppleScript, and even find out
whether there are known replacements for the Perl; in the former case, if a
rewrite seems necessary anyhow, you might want to switch to Perl.)

Other issues:  are you comfortable in AppleScript?  in Perl?  Do you have
some latitude, or are you severely limited in the resources you can devote
to this?  Do you have so much freedom that you could deliberately switch to
the venue in which you're less comfortable, for learning purposes?
