I went for a third option and fixed the current version on older

that's great! I saw the update release on all systems... tried from 10.6
to 10.13 on my available systems. This also means "port upgrade xar"
picks it up easily and builds
On 10.5 bear patience, I'm back with building other stuff... will
continue net week
10.13 : built fine, installed and now system continued with rev-upgrade
big stuff and seems working for now (churning out rust/rustc/cargo -
notable troublemakers)
10.11 : built fine! work on other packages resumed
10.7 : built fine! work on other packages resumed
10.6 : built fine!
10.5 x86_64: built fine
10.5 x86: built fine -- manually fixing certain deps, keep tuned.
10.5 PPC32: not needed, possibly because no clang and friends are installed.
from a first glance, I have more failures on more packages, but they are
not directly related to libxml2 / xar breakage, but more that new
versions of ports (or old versions with new tools) need a little bit of
nudging on older system. Python 314, rust and poppler being major
troublemakers.
