First of all, you should be aware of a known problem with rEFIt. When you go to the EFI shell, then return to the rEFIt menu and select a boot option, there is a chance that things will break, because the shell tends to mess with open file handles and the likes (as in unmounting and re-mounting all file systems for probing). You may get better results when you go straight for the menu option. Also, you can always try to run elilo from the EFI shell instead of from the rEFIt menu. Well, I don't think it's your fault. Building a working elilo binary is a black art that not even the elilo/gnu-efi maintainers (which I guess includes myself) have mastered. That's probably due to the fact that elilo has had very little attention in the last few years, but gcc+binutils keeps changing anyway.
