I tried alsa-1.0.13 (the kernel driver) but it didn't work.

The vanilla kernel driver (sigmatel patch applied) works fine
on my MBP (pre - core 2). Speakers + headphones work,
mic needs some whacking (see an earlier post) but works.
The speakers mute when the headphones are plugged in.
Only analog signals tested.

Without the sigmatel patch I *do*have*problems*:
 - microphone doesn't work
 - suspend/resume doesn't work reliably. Sometimes, after
resuming I need to play with settings (e.g., I have to
activate 'line in as output' which seems wrong).

==> I recommend *not* to remove this patch. Of course,
it would even be better if someone found the time to resolve
this carefully and to make sure the complete state of the
chip is saved/restored across suspend/resume (which currently
is not the case, see earlier post regarding the microphone).
