Just so everyone knows, I've solved the problem with fdisk. You might be confused: the XP partition is sda4 eh? So it's not garbled, but sda3 should be ext3... I changed that AND make the active partition to be the XP (sda4) partition using fdisk and lilo.

Then I rebooted and updated the MBR with the rEFIt partitioning tool. Everything seems to be working now, except that there are 2 options to boot ubuntu, one says "Boot linux from HDD" and the other says "Boot linux from sda3"

If anyone knows how to fix that, let me know. But it works just fine now: OSX, XP, and ubuntu all boot smoothly again.

It looks like the partition type of the Windows XP partition is
garbled. I think it should be 0xb (W95 FAT32 in fdisk), at least on a
32 but system. Just try to change it with fdisk in Linux.
