This is not "new" checking hardware - it's at least five years old!
I had to set the region before I could play DVDs.
You can use 'regionset' under Linux or use MacOSX...
But beware: You only can change the region 5 times (like anywhere else).
Maybe there is a hack for the firmware to play any region, but I do
not know of any.
