Hi guys,

Thanks for your responses.

Nicolas thanks for sharing your experiences with this. I actually do
find it encouraging that you got the responses you did from
NEC/Mitubishi and Fujitsu/Siemens. I'm not too surprised that a
hardware manufacturer that isn't predominantly computer oriented like
Samsung (I think) is not very responsive.

In my note to apple (which I'm still deciding whether to snail mail or
post) I don't explicitly ask them to develop SMC drivers but I do ask
them for the specs and I point out that they support windows (to some
degree) on their machines whereas it would be easier for them to
support Linux (since so much of the work is already essentially done
by the community). I also ask them to bug ATI and perhaps to have
some of their developers participate in these lists.

I agree that a few complaint letters probably will not move mountains
but I think if enough of us try we can get some notice. It seems that
in general companies have felt free to ignore Linux users but I hope
things are starting to change. The number one request to Dell on its
ideastorm is adding Linux support, Lenevo promises a Linux compatible
laptop, Novell and Redhat are pushing Linux in the enterprise and
Linux has gotten to the point where a lot of hardware is plug and
play. Ubuntu and similar distributions have made Linux readily
available in a hassle-free way to a semi-technical person. I'm not
saying that we'll have linux on every desktop but I think in the next
year or two there's a chance that linux might stop be seen as a
marginal OS and companies might start supporting it better. So this
is a good era to start pestering companies, particularly if we do it
en mass.

In any case it doesn't hurt to do it and I think most companies will
respond if they start getting large number of customer complaints that
they can (in principle) easily resolve. Apple might be an exception
because its ideologically xenophobic but we should still give it a
shot.

cheers,
Sheer
