I actually don't have a macbook pro. ;)  The default driver with the
fedora install is intel. I tried (maybe not hard enough) i810 instead,
with 'improved' result: the external monitor just stayed completely
dead.
(I must say I'm pretty clueless when it comes to video configuration.)

Uhm, no; it's an LCD panel as well. Why don't you just send over your
co-worker's widescreen for a day? ;-)
