My MBP C2D used to do the same, except even more often when I used 
suspend2 - luckily it could just keep resuming until it worked so it 
wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Discussing it with Nigel Cunningham (Mr suspend2) I got the impression 
that it is a timing issue somewhere. I then went 2.6.21rc2-mactel (with 
the timestamped bootup stuff) to try to trace it and never saw it again! 
So either the timing is different or the issue is fixed in later kernels.
