Hi,
I get that problem with the same frequency on an intel macmini
connected to a screen. However, I can reproduce it almost every time if I
boot it with a fake vga connector. In that case, it boots in
framebuffer mode an never sees the root directory.

Yes, I see that in a MBP CD (cpu T2500) (not core2).
With kernel 2.6.18.4-mactel.
not shure about the "hit rate" of the root device not found.. its a
rare event, but it does happen sometimes.
