Just to pipe in quickly. I might consider selling mine soon which
would put me in a similar position.  I would recommend looking at
companies that have made some effort to support linux such as dell and
IBM.  I know Dell's machines are ugly but they're cheap and
configurable and some of them may have good linux support and its nice
to support people that are linux friendly.  I think there will always
be a problem with cutting edge laptops like the MBP that try to
maximize their weight/space to performance/feature ratio by having
special hardware that isn't well supported by Linux.  I tried googling
around for a sight with some up-to-date linux laptop recommendations
but couldn't find one.  I might suggest something like this at
phoronix.  It might help get companies to be more linux friendly if
they're rated poorly on some sight which really details which laptops
are the most linux friendly.
