Every ones experiences are different and I don't want to be a doomsayer
around here, I've just had some really crappy luck the past 7 months (2 soon
to be 3 different laptops). I mean, I don't see anyone else here reporting
that their laptop overheated and fried something so..... DL burning is an
issue with me as well. I hate these crappy 9.5 FF drives. They are an
unproven new technology and Apple has NO bussiness using them. They should
have redesigned the 15" to accept the standard notebook drive. Period. The
first revision Matshita's produce HORRIBLE write strategies and it was a
crap shoot on getting the disk to be read by other computers. The newer
HD-HL whatevers are better in that regard but I'm getting IO errors and
failed burns with DL's... CD-R's always work and most of the time DVD-R's
work. I've gone thru tons of media too so that's not the issue. In fact, I
wasted more of my Japan TYG0{2,3}'s than I care to admit.

You've been on this list for awhile so I know your aware of all the issues
with the MBP. Power consumption, heat, constantly running fans, et. all....
If your willing to accept that then... Man... Get another one. I still like
mine. I'm Just not happy with Apple as a company and they still need to make
improvements design wise. It seems obvious to me that the biggest thing on
their mind is making their laptops LOOK really nice. That's how they get
people in the door at an apple store and how they sell on their web site.
Well, aesthetics and functionality are 2 completely different things.

IMO, the fans exhausting out the hinge area results in a bottleneck. It
seems they have the intake and exhaust in the same damn area. Really nice.
Let's recirculate all that heat back into the computer... The screen hinge
also looks to impede on air flow (along with only opening slightly past 90
degrees). The laptop being so thin also contributes to the heat factor and
getting that hot air out. I can't possibly imagine that there is a clear and
defined channel for air to flow in this thing.

I'd wait for a bit until we get a really nerdy guinea pig on the list with a
new nvidia MBP. :-) We need reports on how it operates. Just the whole low
down. We had one report a few days to a week ago, but it was pretty terse
and didn't touch on much. DONT be that ginuea pig!! You may end up
regretting it. It's up to you Daniel.. I can't imagine the new ones are any
better on heat than the 2,2's... It's REALLY nice IMO that they ditched
ATI... I've always been a fan of Nvidia in general, especially under Linux.
Driver support is FAR superior.

You need to think about it for sure, but just remember how I use my
computer. I compile source code ALOT. I mean ALOT. At the end of the day
when I'm done, I ussually leave it on over night because I'm a frequent BT
user. O.k... I hear some of you thinking already. "No wonder he has a heat
problem". On 24/7 with high cpu activity... Well... It's a computer. It's
SUPPOSED to be designed to be used, not looked at. I've done the same thing
with my 500mhz G3 pismo for years. That sucker is still kicking. The PRAM
battery is dead and the screen is going bad but it still works.

It also depends on what software you use. I bet if I switched to TWM I'd see
some improvements in power usage and heat. Maybe, I don't know. I hate TWM
and am a BIG Gnome fan so I'm not gonna do that... :-) Just don't rush into
it. Maybe go ahead and sell it but put the money into the bank. TRY to be
patient using your old laptop/desktop and wait for someone here to really
put the new MBP's thru the ringer. Dollar for Dollar, you are most certainly
better off buying something else. Do some comparison and you'll find the
MBP's are the most expensive laptop on the market. That coupled with some of
the apparent problems that exist and it's a wonder anyone buys these things.
But hey, they look really damn cool... :-)
