Hi Sven, Thanks for the feedback. I'd just like to encourage anyone with a rev 3 macbook pro to share their experiences on this list. Please also see below.

Has no one successfully run the closed source nvidia drivers with the 8600? I know they've had some linux problems but I presume at least someone has gotten them to work. > During the winter (in Germany), my fans rotate at about 2000 RPM (like in > MacOSX most of the time). Its hard to tell with my machine right now since I've upgraded to Ubuntu Gutsy which broke pommed and a lot of other stuff but I don't think this is how things used to work (so it now seems to run even hotter). If I recall the machine seemed to start at 2000 rpm but eventually just crawl up to 5k and then back down again, etc... I do often run Xgl which might be the problem. The problem is that most of the time I'm in linux I'm trying to upgrade/compile stuff so I stress the processor which heats it up. What kernel are you running and have you done anything to minimize heat generation (I know you've been playing with this for a long time so I'm sure you have)? > > I think the problem are the unusable power savings mechanisms of the > ATI graphics card (and maybe the unoptimized power saving of the CPU, > i.e. kernel drivers, USB, etc...) so the average CPU/GPU temperature is > higher and the fans need to transport more heat out of the box... > > > Are there other driver issues that > > don't exist on the V2? No, I'm guessing someone's posted the rev 3 outputs somewhere so i should compare them. > > Some other laptops are much louder! I also have a sony 17" with an ati radeon mobility 9700 though and it was always very loud when running beryl (though its old so the fans might just be dirty). > > Not really. Well this looks very exciting: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FreeSoftwareLaptop Unfortunately its probably months or years away ;-( There's an exciting amout of new linux-oriented open hardware (see openmoko). cheers, Sheer ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by DB2 Express Download DB2 Express C - the FREE version of DB2 express and take control of your XML.
