I recant my earlier post. Today I tried the exact same procedure to rename a table in numbers and all I could get it to do was to select the A column. It wouldn't enter the edit field on the name for love nor money. I'm just going to bypass the name thing and accept the default table names, using sheet/table name qualifiers to reference cells/ranges from different tables when necessary. Also, giving unique header names to cell ranges enables me to access ranges without qualifiers. Its a reasonable workaround, I can't be bothered getting frustrated with software anymore.
