Hie there I have not had this problem, except once lately when I was using my Braille Edge 40 with my iPhone 5 S. I fixed it by telling Siri to turn on VoiceOver. Although she responded by telling me that VoiceOver was already running, it turned on the speech anyway. I don't understand this, but it worked, and I have had this work before when VoiceOver got silent. I have not, however, had this problem in Messages. I had it happen to me while doing an e-mail.
