Press VO Command Enter. The first press deselects the currently highlighted file. The next press selects the file. Continue navigating through the list and press VO Command Enter on each file to add it. Pressing the sequence on any selected file removes its selection. I navigate using VO up and down arrow, but am not certain if this is absolutely necessary.
